An example of a web-based lesson.

Topic: Health problems.

Level: pre-intermediate

Language predicted: revision of health lexis

Time allocated: 45 minutes

Web site used:www.noah-health.org/

Procedure:

  1. Warm-up: Short introduction of the topic by asking students three short questions: Have you ever been ill? What do you do if you're ill? What would you do if you lived in Alaska and you got ill, but the weather conditions unabled you to go outside?
  2. The main part of the lesson:
    1. You live in Alaska. There's 400C below zero and the whole place is snowbound. You cannot go outside your lodge. Unfortunately your teenage son got ill. He has diarrhoea and high temperature. You've called your family doctor but you couldn't get through. You have an access to the internet, and you don't have any medicines, but you have the supply of food. Your friend once told you that she had found the treatment to her daughter's illness in the web. She gave you the address of the page: www.noah-health.org/ Here are some tips she gave you. Try to follow them and looking for the information won't take you long: In the health topics find stomach disorders. Remember that our children are in their teens and that gastrointestinal infection is very troublesome. You usually don't remember to go to the next page in the document to check some more information. Don't forget to do it this time.
    2. Your teacher will give you a hand-out with some useful vocabulary, please try to guess the meaning of the words from the context. If it's too difficult find the meaning in the web-dictionary (you can find a cambridge dictionary on this site).
    3. Now work in pairs and role-play the scene: one person is a mother and the other is a son. Tell the son the way of the treatment of his sickness and try to use the advice you have found. Don't forget that your son has got diarrhoea!!! It's not easy to talk in this situation. ;-)
